» Language Arts

The Open Court Reading Program has been in existence since 2000. The Los Angeles Unified School District and the Board of Education have supported a rigorous, common, standard-based curriculum for all students in all schools. The Open Court program consists of Print Awareness, Phonemic Awareness, Sounds and Letters, Spelling and Vocabulary, Writing, and Reading. We want to build upon Phonemic awareness through blending, dictation, decodables, word knowledge, academic language, and vocabulary. We also want to utilize a reading program that helps students perfect comprehension strategies, comprehension skills, reading, writing, thinking, analyzing, and communication skills as preparation for the twenty-first century.

The curriculum is supported by ongoing professional development aligned to the adopted core programs for all teachers and administrators. There is a periodic assessment system to measure student progress at the end of each unit. There is collaborative discussion among teachers, coaches, and administrators about the diagnostic assessment results to ensure that every student need is being met. Data is used to improve instruction. Everyone at Westport Heights is dedicated to and responsible for student learning.

» Health

Westport Height's staff is committed to shaping healthy children in body and mind so that they may live long, prosperous, and productive lives. We guide children to make decisions using the Six Pillars of Character through use of monthly themes and assemblies. We sponsor the fundraiser, Jumprope for Heart, which teaches children the importance of exercising the heart muscle, while at the same time teaching compassion for persons afflicted with heart disease. We use Second Step, an anti-violence program, and Too Good For Drugs for helping children avoid the dangers of drug abuse. Children also learn about healthy nutrition choices from the classroom instruction utilizing textbooks, magazines, newspaper, and internet exploration.

»English Language Development
The Structured English Immersion Program provides nearly all classroom instruction in English with curriculum and instruction designated for English Learners.  English Learners receive instruction to acquire the academic English they need to meet grade level content standards, with the goal of developing the ability to understand and use English for a variety of social and academic purposes.  Students are grouped by their proficiency level for a daily English language development lesson.
Using our state mandated program, "Into English!" teachers employ special methods in English to teach students grade level concepts and skills. These special teaching methods and accommodations help English learners meet the content standards for their grade level in language arts, math, science, social studies and other subjects.

  »Science
The District recently adopted Delta Education, Full Option Science System (FOSS) as the new elementary science program for K-5 students.  The science content, lesson design, and instructional strategies in FOSS are a high quality program with students "learning by doing."  Each grade will teach Life, Physical, and Earth Science during the year.  The program is standards based with an emphasis on experimentation, observation, and investigation.

Periodic science assessments are administered to all students in Grades 4-5.  The assessments are formative in nature and measure areas of student strength and weakness on the standards covered in each respective instructional module.  The assessment data allow teachers to inform their instructional practices and improve student achievement.
